  • Recuring Lesson: Torque to specifications, mark lug nut and stud. Inspect daily.
Over a 10-year span we have recorded 13 separate incidents of wheels nearly or completely separating from Type 6 engines. In most cases, lug nuts are overtightened which compromises the strength of the wheel studs. Use a system to mark lug nuts after each torque to factory setting.
  • Recurring Lesson: Equip All UTVs with an Accessible and Serviceable Fire Extinguisher
Over a 10-year span we have recorded eleven separate incidents related to UTVs catching fire. Equip all UTVs with easily accessible fire extinguishers. Regularly inspect and maintain fire extinguishers. Inspect all UTVs for flammable debris buildup.
  • Recurring Lesson: Carry a Soft Stretcher
A soft stretcher, also known as a carry-all, is a lightweight, flexible stretcher with nylon carry handles. A soft stretcher is stored folded up (like a space blanket) and is easily kept in a vehicle and/or carried in a pack on the fireline.
